Visions captured here are an attempt to reconcile, break down, and find peace in—conscious or otherwise—the events of another era, of another time—chapters that never close but which remain present through other forms as time moves onwards—the original images becoming hazier as they move further into the distance…
Earlier works attempted to recreate moments and scenes from dance floors that may have never existed—these dancefloors were his escape, albeit an escape that he himself rarely visited—only dreamed of. When Terre Thaemlitz spoke of the House Nation pretending that “clubs are an oasis from suffering, but [that] suffering is in here with us,” it crystalized a feeling deeply felt.
As his work has continued to evolve, his focus has shifted to understanding and recording where he is in this moment—in this place—in this timeline. Gone are the i/allusions to the dance floor, replaced instead by works presented as physical artifacts—pinpoints to hyper-specific moments in his journeys. These works are the realization of dissecting a past (whatever a past is) of joy and sorrow in real time; of processing—of accepting—of what it means to move forward.
Peter Skwiot Smith is an artist & designer based in Saint Paul Minnesota, where he lives with his family, and their two cats. He is one half of the collective known as The Future Sucks.
